Day Twenty Four

- 4 Hours Interning - 1 hour blogging  - 1 Hour odds + ends 162     Previous Hours +  6 hours today = 168  hours total Today I worked in the mom and baby unit. It was BUSY. I was doing three things all at once - answering the phones, making kits, and running things to pathology. (I also did a cupcake run to the other mom and baby section because I was the "cutest, and therefore most likely to get an adequate supply of cupcakes"). I also made ice packs and delivered things when the nurses wanted. I also walked a couple families out, which was exciting (but exhausting, too!).  The presentation yesterday went WELL!!! I did it under 9:45 minutes for the first time, and I am just happy with how it went.

Day Twenty Three

- 4 hours at internship - 2 at School  - 1 hour blogging - 1 website 154     Previous Hours +  8 hours today =  162 hours total Today on my way out of my internship, I met a pathology front desk lady who grew up near University of British Columbia, and we exchanged contact info. She said she would be happy to offer me guidance/advice/show me around/just talk to that was awesome. For another day, I finished all the work that was given to me early AND well. As tonight is senior project presentations, I happily volunteered to leave early (especially because my boss was ENTIRELY OUT of things for me to do because I have been working so efficiently). That was how I met Sabrina, my Vancouver contact. My boss also (kindly) used part of his lunch break to actually show me stuff. Today - mainly because I told him I was presenting later and he wanted to give me something exciting to talk about when it came to pathology - showed me around where they cut parts of...

Day Twenty Two

143  Previous Hours +  11 hours today =  154  hours total Today I spent 4 hours in Radiology doing slightly less boring paperwork. I also spent around 6 hours working on my presentation and product today.  And then I got one hour for blogging.

Day Twenty One

- 12 hours at Maker Faire  - 1 Hour Blogging  130   Previous Hours +  13 hours today =  143  hours total Today I spent TWELVE hours doing Maker Faire stuff - I was going from 8am until 8pm, and I was really tired when I got home. It was really fun though! I talked about cells until it hurt to think and got to wander around. I also befriended two booths, and they both said they want me to stay in contact (my issue is that there is a lot of stuff in my lab coat pockets!  In short, today was awesome! I will try and update this blog post tomorrow when I'm not as mentally tired.

Day Twenty

Image
Nothing Senior Project related happened today (and this is OK at this point in time because I am done with all the components and have enough hours. The only thing that I really need to do is practice my presentation and time it [because I know I can talk for more than 10 minutes about this topic] and improve my product if I have time). Today I slept in until 9:30 ( I clocked in 11 HOURS OF SLEEP), got a driving lesson from my Dad, and then prepped and went to Bay's prom. It is now Sunday at around 2AM, and I am going to go to bed. PS: Below is a photo of me before I met up with who I went with.

Day Nineteen

Internship: - 5.5 Hours at Maker Faire Time on Presentation: 0.5 Hour Other - Friday Senior Meeting - 4 Hours - 2.5 hours on product - 1 Hour Blogging 116.5  Previous Hours +  13.5 hours today =  130  hours total Today I actually helped work the Maker Faire. I was with the wonderful organization  GalaxyGoo  helping kids of all ages (this includes adults) made 3D models of cells. It was fun but exhausting because of all the age ranges (within the span of 3 minutes I was explaining to 3 and 5 year old siblings and then to college students). It is has been a long but rewarding day. I also finished my product today. I will try and make it even better over the weekend, but at this point prepping for my presentation is an even higher priority.

Day Eighteen

So my WIFI was out yesterday. Interhship: 0 hours Product: 0 hours Other: - At School Check-Ins, etc: 1.5 Hours - Sports Celebration - 4  Hours 112  Previous Hours + 4.5 hours today =  116.5 hours total Today I didn't do very much - I went to school and checked in with teachers because I thought I wasn't coming to school on Friday.

Day Seventeen

Hours on Internship: 6 - 4.5 at CPMC in the Mom and Baby Department - 1.5 on Maker Faire Prep Time Spent on Product: 1 Hour Miscellaneous Senior Project Odds and Ends: 1 hour Blogging: + 1 Hour Presentation: +1 Hour 102 Previous Hours + 10 hours today =  112 hours total Today I spent time working in the mom and baby unit. I had a much more comfortable time because I was in the less busy section and actually had time to talk and learn.  I talked to and learned from doctors and nurses and other interns. It was less high stakes which was nice. The only downside was that I accidentally almost walked into my pathology boss' office as I spaced out and missed the stairs. I also spent an hour at Drew getting ready for Cuba, but I really don't think that counts towards my internship. I spend an hour editing my presentation, and another hour working on my website. This was more so working on the jobs page and turning links into better versions of themselves...

Day Sixteen

Hours on Internship: 6 - 4.5 at CPMC in the Pathology Department - 1.5 on Maker Faire Prep Time Spent on Product: 1 Hour Time Spent on Presentation: 2 Hours 93 Previous Hours + 9 hours = 102 hours total Today I went to the radiology department again. I got a more extensive tour (which was awesome because I got some of the same information again while learning new stuff). I got to meet the head honcho who will be my 'true' boss/is my boss' boss. Everyone is so nice, and pathology is something I am now seriously considering as a career. Today I made a lot of boxes (relevant for long and short term storage) and labeled lots of slides. I was told by a doctor to walk around the department when I got bored, and by two bosses were like come say hi and tell us to get you new stuff to do when you get bored (which IS very nice, especially considering I am already engaged in their department!). So Far I have also spent one hour working on my product.

Day Fifteen

Time Spent Volunteering Today: 4.5 Hours - 4.5 hours in Radiology - 0.5 hours on Maker Faire Today was pretty boring in the radiology department - I did just do paperwork (although I did so much so quickly I impressed my boss!) Time Spent on Product Today: 1 Hour I edited my pages, as well as edited physical therapy section to website. Other - Time spent blogging could be chalked up to one hour. Total Time on Project: 86 Previous + 7 today =   93 total hours

Day Fourteen

Time Spent Volunteering Today: 1 Hours - 0.5 hours spent doing maker faire prep - 0.5 hours spent fixing the math on my blog Time Spent Blogging: 1 Hour Time Spent on Product Today: 0 Total Time on Project: 76 Previous + 10 today =  86 total hours Today I came home from Catalina. I get 8 hours of credit for that, I also made a really stupid math mistake on day 4, so I spent half an hour fixing that and the double checking my work. In addition, I spent half an hour working on Maker Faire stuff. I ran out of energy to work on my product tonight (but I swear, that will happen tomorrow!).

Day Eleven

Today I was packing for Catalina. No project was done.

Day Thirteen

Time Spent Volunteering Today: 0 Hours Time Spent on Product Today: 8 Hours Time Spent on Product Total: 36 Hours Total Time on Project: 68 Previous + 8 today = 76 total hours Off to Catalina with no internet!

Day Twelve

Time Spent Volunteering Today: 0 Hours Time Spent on Product Today: 8 Hours Time Spent on Product Total: 28 Hours Total Time on Project: 60 Previous + 8 today = 68 total hours Off to Catalina with no internet..... but I get to count Catalina towards my total hours!

Day Ten

Time Spent Volunteering Today: 4.5 Hours - 4.5 Hours in Mom and Bay Care Unit/ At CPMC 4.5 hours today + 36.5 previous = 41 Time spent volunteering total: 41 hours Time Spent on Product Today: 4 Hours Time Spent on Product Total: 20 Hours Time Spent Blogging: 1 Hour Total Time on Project: 50.5 Previous + 9.5 today = 60 total hours Today I worked in the mom and baby care unit. The most I did was answer the phone when patients needed things. I mostly made ice packs from ice and diapers (I would be happy to field questions about this, but I don't have too many answers myself), and restocked the kitchenette.  Surprisingly, pathology seems to be my favorite department so far, both in terms of people and what they are doing. I expected today's shift to be my absolute favorite, but it wasn't. I am still trying to pin point if it is anything more than stated. I had a mini existential crisis with regards to the layout of my website.  I added some pages, but...

Day Nine

Time Spent Volunteering Today: 4.5 Hours - 4 Hours in the Pathology  Department 4 hours today + 32.5 previous = 36.5 Time spent volunteering total: 36.5 hours Time Spent on Product Today: 1 Hours Time Spent on Product Total: 16 Hours Time Spent Blogging: 1 Hour Total Time on Project: 44.5 Previous + 6 today = 50.5 total hours 4 hours in Pathology So today, there was a slight mixup, and the department wasn't ready for me/a volunteer despite saying that they needed one in the past. I think an email must not have  been sent or a phone call not made.  But they hosted me kindly. I was shown around by a dude whose name was something similar to Kevin or Dave (I should remember by tomorrow - UPDATE - his hame is Ryan). He was very kind, energetic and knowledgeable (although today so stressed he didn't take a lunch break). I helped ease his stress by labelling slides which is something he normally has to do at the end o the day. I did enough o...

Day Eight

Time Spent Volunteering Today: 4.5 Hours - 4.5 Hours in the Radiology Department 4.5 hours today + 18 previous = 32.5 Time spent volunteering total: 32.5 hours Time Spent on Product Today: 0 Hours Time Spent on Product Total: 15 Hours Time Blogging: 1 Hour Total Time on Project: 39 Previous + 5.5 today = 44.5 total hours UPDATE: My internet went out yesterday. No project time due to no internet. I started at CPMC today  and sent 4.5 hours there. I worked in the radiology department. Because the  office lady in charge was not there, I observed the CT scans. I changed sheets in between guests (and wiped down the machine), as well as talked to staff (when they had a spare moment!). Then, for the last hour, I did paperwork. I've done paperwork before (and lots of it all at once!) at this was the most tedious paperwork I have had to do in a while. But I am glad I did it.

Day Seven

Nothing Senior Project related happened today.

Day Six

Time Spent Volunteering Today: 0 Hours - No 0 hours today + 18 previous = 18 Time spent volunteering total: 18 hours Time Spent on Product Today: 2 Hours Time Spent on Product Total: 15 Hours Time Spent Blogging: 1 hour Total Time on Project: 36 Previous + 3 today = 39 total hours Yesterday I got sidetracked when it came to working on my project. I am going to spend around two hours over the course of today making up for my own lost time yesterday.

Day Five

Time Spent Volunteering Today: 3 Hours - 2.5 hours at CPMC - 0.5 maker faire prep 3 hours today + 15 previous = 18 Time spent volunteering total: 18 hours Time Spent on Product Today: 1 Hours Time Spent on Product Total: 13 Hours Time Blogging: 1 Hour Total Time on Project: 31 Previous + 5 today = 36 total hours Today I went into CPMC to get my uniform and get a feel for the campus I will be working at. The campus is the California Campus, which - while far-ish from my house - is one bus ride away and close to school. I will be working in the Radiology department Mondays from 9-1, the Pathology Department from 9-1 on Tuesdays, and the Baby+ Mom nursing units on Wednesdays from 9-1. I am so excited!!!!!!!!!  I also got my uniform, which a teal top and black pants. It isn't very flattering, but it is delightfully official. I took a quick selfie right before heking out I was so excited. I also did minimal prep for the Maker Faire. Now, off to do my prod...

Day Four

Time Spent Volunteering Today: 3 Hours - 3 hours project, maker faire prep 3 hours today + 12 previous = 15 Time spent volunteering total: 15 hours Time Spent on Product Today: 3 Hours Time Spent on Product Total: 12 Hours Time Spent Blogging: 1 Hour Total Time on Project: 24 Previous + 7 today = 31 total hours 9:30am Today's activities might be somewhat limited by the Spring Gallery Walk. I have to be at school at 3 to practice for the salsa rueda performance in the spring concert, and I'm not sure if I am going to have time after that to work on it (and I have to leave the house around 2!!!). I will bring my computer just in case, but I am doubtful that I will get to work on it (UPDATE: I DID!!!). My plan for today is to work on my final product, and prep for the Maker faire. Update at 10pm: I was able to get some additional work in on the bus and while waiting for things to happen at school. My most notable achievement was republishing my website, so no...

Day Three

Time Spent Volunteering Today: 3 Hours - 2 hours of CPMC paperwork, etc - 1 hour of Maker Faire 3 hours today + 9 previous = 12 Time spent volunteering total: 12 hours Time Spent on Product Today: 5 Hours Time Spent on Product Total: 10 Hours Time Spent Blogging: 1 Hour Total Time on Project: 15 Previous + 9 today = 24 total hours Today I went to CPMC to do paperwork and get my badge. I have one more hoop to get though, but it is not hard (it is transport training). Considering how SWEATY I was when I got there my photo is surprisingly good (I will attach a photo tomorrow if I both have time and remember. If not tomorrow, Friday.).  I also started prepping for the Maker Faire, something I don't usually do this early. I also put a good amount of work into my website. I have got what I think are all of the sections, and a good deal of the pages. I also worked on formatting the pages, and finally hit the learning curve I was hoping wouldn't happen (but hey, ...

KitTea/Therapy Animals +Pets

Here is what seems to be a fairly comprehensive list of places that offer Pet Therapy in California : http://www.therapypets.com/jackies-list/practitioners/california/ What exactly are therapy animals? What do they do? They are animals that have been screened and undergone behavioral training, but are not truly considered service animals. This is because they exist just to provide comfort (As opposed to doing any specific tasks as classified under the Americans with Disabilities Act) (3). This is an important distinction because the owners are therefore not covered under many laws (although some states have protective laws in place). While commonly dogs, they can be rabbits, cats, and other species (providing they have the right temperament). They are screened for their positive ability to interact with  humans, other animals, and the world around them. Additionally, they must not shed a lot, be well and even tempered, be well socialized/exposed to many different environmen...

Day Two

Time Spent Volunteering Today: 5 Hours - 1 Hour with Julia - 4 on KitTea work - 5 Total Today + 4 Previous Time Spent Volunteering Total: 9 Hours Time Spent on Product Today: 1 Hours Time Spent on Product Total: 5 Hours Time Spent Blogging Today: 1 hour Total Time Spend on Project: 15 Hours 1:05 PM Today I worked with Julia on her project. I let her interview me about my project. it was good for both of us. She got audio for her radio station, and I got to talk about and better fine tune my project. That happened during what was assembly for the rest of the school. It was a nice moment to talk about progress on our senior projects. I also got confirmation that I can start my volunteer internship at CPMC a little sooner than expected, which is awesome. I should be able to start on possibly Friday, and maybe Thursday. If not then, than for sure on Monday. I have salsa rueda practice for the concert with Ms. Greene after this (during what would have been A Block), and...

Day One

Time Spent Volunteering Today: 4 Hours (all with KitTea) Time Spent Volunteering Total: 4 Hours Time Spent on Project Today: 4 Hours Time Spent Blogging: 1 Hour Time Spent on Project Total: 5 Hours Today was a slight fail, but also a success. There was a miscommunication between me and one of my internships - the one at KitTea - , and this means that today might be the only day that I am able to volunteer there during senior project. But it was a good day overall - I got to work with cats, and saw the positive benefits of that happening. But as I was confirming yesterday to arrange more hours, and it turns out I needed to do a trial day. This was something I didn't realize earlier as it was never made clear to me. Because of this, I arranged to start today, as opposed to two weeks prior. Assuming I get selected to work more, I will do so. I also take responsibility for the miscommunication on my end. I did learn from this, though. But in the mean time, if I don't get to ...
